Creation of a Socially Responsible Positive Media Culture


SAARC Media Internship programme organized by the Ministry of Mass Media and Information in collaboration with the SAARC Information Centre commenced on 28th July, 2012 at the Galadari Hotel, Colombo under the patronage of Dr. Charitha Herath, Secretary to the Ministry of Mass Media and Information. Addressing this conference organized with the objective of discussing extensively the policies, guidance and regulations in relation to Media in the South Asian region Dr.Charitha Herath expressed his views on the massive development in the field of media and how the regulation policies should be implemented.
He indicated the necessity of a National Media Policy to ensure the right of thought and expression in accordance with the Constitution of Sri Lanka . He future emphasized the need for the creation of a media culture to highlight the national identity, compromise in diversity and unity, understanding of the social responsibility of Media, the creation of a socially responsible media culture while securing media freedom and the need for the implementation of a programme to encourage professionalism in media personnel.
Dr. Charitha Herath further expressed his views enlightening the foreign delegates on the policies and progrmmes implemented aimed at providing more opportunities for the media personnel for a meaningful media practice in Sri Lanka in accordance with the 'Mahinda Chinthana' Policy.
